Apple’s find my app update makes tracking lost items easier – even with airlines

Apple AirTags have been used for some time to allow people to find items. From phones, to pets and expensive luggage. Soon, over 15 major airlines will adapt to accept the AirTag feature.

In the latest iOS 18.2 beta, Apple added a handy new feature to the Find My app: users can now share a link to track the location of a lost AirTag or Find My-enabled accessory. And, Apple announced in a recent press release that over 15 major airlines will soon support this feature, allowing travellers to use Find My links to help locate lost or delayed luggage.

How the new find my link feature works

The new feature in the Find My app lets you create a link that shares the real-time location of a lost AirTag or other Find My accessory. You can send this link to others, and they’ll be able to view the item’s location on an interactive map, complete with timestamps that show the most recent updates. The map refreshes automatically as the item’s location changes, so anyone with the link can easily track it.

Airline partnerships to support lost bag tracking

Apple has teamed up with over 15 major airlines to make this feature even more useful for travellers. Soon, airlines will be able to accept Find My item links as part of their customer service process. This will help airline staff and customers locate misplaced or delayed luggage more efficiently and privately.

Some of the airlines joining the program include:

  • Aer Lingus
  • Air Canada
  • British Airways
  • Delta Air Lines
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
  • Lufthansa
  • United Airlines, and many more.

In total, more than 15 airlines worldwide will support Find My links, with more expected to join in the future.

Privacy and security features

Apple has worked with these airlines to ensure that Find My links remain secure and private. Access to each link is restricted to a few authorised people, and anyone accessing the link will need to log in through their Apple Account or a verified partner email address.

When will this be available?

iOS 18.2 is currently available as a beta for developers and public testers. The full update is expected to launch for everyone in December. Once it’s out, this new Find My feature will make it easier than ever to keep track of personal items, whether at home or while travelling.
