YouTube Shorts are expanding to 1-minute limits

Previously, YouTube Shorts would only allow 30-second videos, but now, the platform is increasing this to 1-minute videos. This change will occur on the 15th October, but won’t affect current videos.

YouTube Shorts are expanding their timestamp. Previously, YouTube had a 30-second limit on their Shorts option. However, the platform is extending this to allow up to 1-minute videos. This change will come into place on the 15th October.

Their rivals over at TikTok have allowed 10-minute videos for over two years now. However, it could be argued, if you’re looking for longer form, head to YouTube rather than Shorts. With the new update also comes dimension changes.

Now, users can upload in square formatting, as well as adding videos taller than the standard 9:16 format. This is just one of the updates YouTube are adding to their Shorts. They’re also introducing a feature which shares a preview of video comments within the Shorts’ feed.

They’re even working on an option to pull clips from YouTube videos and turn them into Shorts through remixing clips. You’ll be able to add this to the audio strip feature they added earlier this year. The audio strip option allows users to take part of the audio from a video.

They can then go on to place this audio within their own video. Adding it as a side by side creation. Working with the original video next to the user’s new Short. The platform is even working on a skip option to limit the amount of Shorts displayed.

Not everyone heads to YouTube for short-form video. Some prefer longer, more substantial videos and therefore will love the option to limit how many they see. Currently, if you head to the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, you can temporarily limit the amount of Shorts.

YouTube are working on an option to make this feature more permanent for those who only want to see long-form content. However, they haven’t discussed what this will look like. For now, it seems they’re just playing catch-up to TikTok.
