Spotify’s app has just had an update. New playlist options have been added to allow users to organise their music better. Also, users will now be able to download podcasts and songs in the background while continuing to use the app.

Spotify is rolling out a major update to its mobile app, introducing a suite of highly requested organization tools and playback features. Shifting focus away from recent AI-driven experiments—such as AI-generated podcasts and custom remixes—the streaming giant is delivering a massive quality-of-life upgrade for users who love keeping their music and podcast libraries meticulously organized.
Here is everything you need to know about the latest Spotify mobile features, what they do, and who gets access to them.
1. Playlist folders finally come to mobile
If you have a massive library of curated tracks, this feature is a game-changer. Spotify is finally porting its popular desktop playlist folders feature to the mobile app.
- Custom organisation: You can now create, name, and arrange folders directly on your phone.
- Nested folders: For ultra-specific sorting, you can even place folders inside other folders.
2. Save time with bulk editing
Cleaning up your library just got much faster. Instead of deleting or moving tracks one by one, the new update introduces bulk editing for mobile users.
You can now select, move, or remove multiple songs and podcasts simultaneously. This bulk-edit functionality also applies to your Spotify queue, letting you rearrange your upcoming tracks in seconds.
3. Smarter shuffling and background downloads
Spotify is also tackling two common user frustrations with this update:
- The ‘Reshuffle’ button: Bored of the current random order? A new reshuffle option lets you completely re-mix your shuffled playlist or album sequence if it starts to feel stale.
- Background downloads: You no longer need to keep the app open while saving media. You can now start downloading an album or podcast for offline playback, switch to another app, and let Spotify finish the job in the background.
Feature availability: Free vs. Premium
While some of these new tools are free for everyone, others are locked behind the Spotify Premium subscription.
