Currently, to open a Threads account, you’ll need to connect your Instagram account, as the platform runs through the social media partner. However, there are plans to split the two.

Threads is working on making itself a separate entity from Instagram. Currently, when signing up to Threads, you’ll be asked to connect your Instagram account, which is a problem for those who perhaps aren’t on the platform.
Since the beginning, Threads has wanted to be its own platform, in the same way Facebook is. Despite being under the same Meta umbrella, Facebook and Instagram are very much their own platforms, just as they were before the Meta merge.
But, Threads is quite different. Brought in to rival X (formerly Twitter), Threads was set up far too quickly, it seems. There were several teething problems ironed out along the way, but it was likely too important to push the launch due to controversy with X.
Threads are trialling independent accounts
Due to this, Threads was launched and since the developers have been working on fixing any user concerns. One main concern being, you cannot create an account unless you have an Instagram account. Now, they’re working on changing this.
As you can see from the screenshot provided by an app researcher called Radu Oncescu, some users in the EU can create a solo Threads account now, without the need for an Instagram link. Instead, they simply use an email or mobile number.
A huge step towards becoming an independent platform that can run on its own. Threads will still use your Instagram graph for recommendations at this current time, but, they are moving towards making this separate too.
However, for those users signing up without an Instagram account, there won’t be a possibility to use the Instagram logic for your Threads algorithm. So, these users will see a sneak peek into how the app should run in the future.
It’s a brilliant step. Now, users can have each platform running independently. They don’t all have to tie together. After all, you might have a different audience on one platform to another, and it’s important to be able to separate them.
