The scale of social connectivity

In terms of sheer user numbers, Facebook remains the reigning champion. With over 3 billion monthly active users, it maintains its position as the world’s largest social network, driven by strong adoption in Asia-Pacific and other global markets. However, metrics like total usage time often place YouTube and TikTok higher.

As of early 2024, the number of active social media user identities surpassed 5.04 billion globally. This staggering figure means that well over 60% of the world’s total population is now active on at least one social media platform.

While established giants dominate the user count, platforms like TikTok and newer entrants like Threads show impressive user growth rates. TikTok, in particular, has seen massive increases to now rank among the top five platforms globally by user count, driven by its focus on short-form video. Reddit has also demonstrated significant recent growth in specific markets.

Usage habits and behaviour

The global average time spent on social media platforms is approximately 2 hours and 23 minutes per day. This time varies significantly by country and age; younger demographics (Gen Z) often spend over three hours daily, whereas older users average closer to an hour and a half.

The reasons people use social media are varied, but generally fall into these categories:

  • Connection and socialising: staying in touch with friends and family, and networking with peers.
  • Entertainment and relaxation: consuming video content (YouTube, TikTok), watching live streams, and sharing humorous content.
  • Information and news: accessing current events and news updates, though this varies heavily by platform.
  • Research and discovery: searching for products, services, local recommendations, and educational content.

Platform basics and ownership

The social media landscape is largely controlled by a handful of major tech conglomerates:

  • Meta Platforms, Inc. (formerly Facebook, Inc.) owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.
  • Google (Alphabet Inc.) owns YouTube.
  • ByteDance (a Chinese technology company) owns TikTok.
  • Microsoft owns LinkedIn.
  • Elon Musk (X Corp) owns X (formerly Twitter).

Most major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X, have a standard minimum sign-up age of 13 years old. However, platforms acknowledge that children often bypass this restriction, which remains a core issue in online safety and regulation debates.
