Muting someone on Facebook is a discreet way to limit what you see from them without unfriending or blocking them. It’s a useful feature if you want to take a break from someone’s posts without creating drama or hurting feelings.

What does muting actually do?
When you mute someone (also known as “snoozing” or “unfollowing” on Facebook), here’s what happens:
- You stop seeing their posts in your news feed – Their updates won’t appear unless you visit their profile.
- They won’t be notified – Facebook does not alert the person that you’ve muted or snoozed them.
- You remain friends – Unlike blocking or unfriending, your connection stays intact, and you can still visit each other’s profiles.
Types of muting on Facebook
There are a few different ways to mute someone:
- Snooze for 30 days
This temporarily hides their posts and stories for 30 days. You can do this by tapping the three dots on one of their posts and selecting Snooze for 30 days. - Unfollow permanently
This stops their content from appearing in your feed entirely, without removing them as a friend. - Mute in Messenger
You can mute messages or calls from someone in Facebook Messenger. This means:- You won’t receive message notifications.
- You can still read and reply to messages when you choose.
- They won’t be notified that you’ve muted them.
Can they still interact with you?
Yes. Muting doesn’t affect their ability to:
- Like or comment on your posts
- Tag you in photos
- Message you (unless you’ve muted them in Messenger)
How to undo a mute
To start seeing someone’s posts again:
- Go to their profile
- Tap Following and select Default to unmute
- Or, in Messenger, open the chat, tap their name, and toggle the mute settings off
Muting on Facebook is a great way to take a break from someone’s updates without making it obvious. Whether it’s a friend who posts too often or a family member you need space from, muting gives you control over your feed without causing offence.
