Spotify’s brand-new Offline Backup feature allows listeners to keep going when their internet connection cuts off. The idea is, users can still create playlists even when they’re on the go. The feature will automatically create a unique playlist even without a connection.

Using the songs most recently queued or played, Spotify will create a playlist for you without you having to do a thing. This option is great for those who are plugging into aeroplane mode while on a flight, or for those who might be too far from an internet hub.

Offline Backup is only for those users subscribed to Spotify Premium. It works alongside the current offline mode. There’s no need for manual downloads, so you can travel without needing to prepare a playlist of your favourite songs.

Offline streaming hasn’t changed

Users will still be able to stream offline as normal, but this option gives a little more flexibility if you’ve forgotten to download before you fly. Spotify mentioned the playlist will learn your listening habits as you stream, and will eventually be able to be a little more selective.

Any songs you’ve previously streamed will be stored in your cache. Spotify will be able to bring these tracks into your playlist without requiring the internet. The best bit is, you don’t need to set up a playlist each time. As soon as you’re offline, it will begin.

You’ll notice the Offline Backup playlist appear in your Home feed. You can start listening as soon as it populates. If you want to stream by an artist you frequently listen to, you can select them. Or a certain genre you want to hear.

Spotify even allows the option to add the offline option to your library so you can find it more easily on the go. To get started, you will need to head to the Data Saving and Offline, or Storage section within your Spotify Settings. Switch on the toggle for Offline Listening.

To qualify, you will need a Premium Spotify subscription, and to have listened to at least 5 songs recently. If you cannot see the option to switch the toggle on, check you qualify for these two requirements. Or, check for updates within the Spotify app.
