  • Audio recording: Plug in a microphone or instrument to record vocals, guitars, or any real-world sound.
  • MIDI sequencing: Use a keyboard or your mouse to play virtual instruments like synthesizers, orchestral strings, or drum kits.
  • Editing: Cut out mistakes, move choruses around, and line up your timing perfectly.
  • Mixing and mastering: Balance the volume of different tracks, add effects like reverb and EQ, and make the final track sound professional and polished.

How to choose your first DAW

Choosing your first DAW can feel overwhelming because there are so many options. However, the “best” DAW is simply the one that feels most intuitive to you.

To narrow down your choices, consider these three main factors:

Some DAWs only work on specific computers. For example, GarageBand and Logic Pro are exclusive to Apple Mac computers. If you are on Windows, you will need to look at options like FL Studio, Ableton Live, or Cubar.

While any DAW can technically make any genre of music, some are built with specific workflows in mind.

  • For electronic, hip-hop, and loop-based music: Ableton Live or FL Studio are brilliant. They are designed for quick experimentation, making beats, and working with electronic samples.
  • For traditional band recording and songwriting: Logic Pro (Mac) or Cubase (PC/Mac) are excellent. They mimic a traditional studio setup and handle live audio recording beautifully.

You do not need to spend a fortune to get started. In fact, you shouldn’t.
