Music often helps us navigate our emotions. From joy and excitement to sadness or anger, we use songs to regulate our moods, process experiences, or feel understood. Over time, the genres and lyrics we connect with can reinforce certain emotional tendencies—like empathy, introspection, or confidence.

For example, listening to reflective or melancholic music might deepen your capacity for self-awareness. Meanwhile, energetic or empowering tracks could fuel assertiveness or resilience. In this way, music can gently nudge certain traits to the surface.

Numerous studies have linked music preferences to personality traits. According to research from the University of Cambridge, for example:

  • People who prefer classical or jazz tend to be more open-minded, creative, and introspective.
  • Fans of pop are often outgoing, conventional, and high in self-esteem.
  • Those who enjoy rock or heavy metal may be more curious, but also more emotionally intense or introverted.
  • Hip-hop and rap fans often score high on social confidence and emotional expressiveness.

This doesn’t mean that music determines personality—but it does suggest a strong correlation. In some cases, music may amplify the traits we already lean towards.

Lyrics, in particular, can be powerful. They often express ideas we haven’t fully formed ourselves—about love, power, rebellion, or vulnerability. When we sing along, we’re not just enjoying the melody; we’re internalising the messages.

For younger listeners especially, music can play a role in shaping identity. Whether it’s adopting the style of a favourite artist or quoting song lyrics to express how they feel, people—particularly teens—often use music as a tool for self-discovery and belonging.

Certain songs become so tied to memories and moments that they start to define parts of our personal story. A track played during a difficult time may come to symbolise strength. A song from a joyful summer holiday may colour our sense of optimism.

In this way, music doesn’t just accompany our lives—it actively writes itself into our narrative. And over time, that narrative contributes to how we see ourselves and behave.

So, does music shape our personality? The answer seems to be: yes—at least in part. While personality is shaped by many factors (genetics, environment, experiences), music plays a unique and powerful role in influencing how we think, feel, and express ourselves.
