TikTok is no stranger to removing content without warning. There’s been a lot of confusion over the removal of Bio Links within various user’s profiles. Other users can’t see these links at all. TikTok never seems to speak on these issues.

A lot of users have found themselves posting video content with original sounds and later the sound has been removed. So, why is this? TikTok do have to follow strict guidelines to avoid copyrighted content, but what if the audio is really yours?

Reasons your TikTok sound has been removed

According to TikTok, they only remove sound when it goes against their Community Guidelines. If the audio isn’t completely yours or could be copyright, they will of course remove this. However, even if it is your own sound, you still have to follow their rules.

The platform will alert you when you have had sound removed (so they say) and you will have a chance to appeal this if you wish. TikTok has the final say and there is no telling how long they will take to review your case, so likely you will miss the initial viewing time.

How to recover sound removed by TikTok

If your sound has been removed, you can submit an appeal. You also have the option to replace your audio, so that it will not affect your video while you wait for a decision. However, for some users, this process means they miss the first few hours of the content being live.

The first few hours are important for growth and exposure. You’re more likely to have your video seen by a wider audience if it gains traction in the first few hours. After this time, if your video is on a low amount of views, it won’t perform.

Sound removed for Community Guideline violations

If you believe you have not broken the rules, please submit an appeal:

1. Head to your muted video.
2. Click the notice at the bottom of the video to view more details (why it was removed).
3. Choose Submit appeal and follow the instructions.

📌 Please note: Your TikTok sound will remain muted while they review this appeal.

The concern with submitting an appeal is, it isn’t guaranteed to be successful. Unfortunately, if your appeal gets disapproved, your sound will remain muted, and you won’t be able to replace the sound. You get to choose between changing your audio, or, making an appeal.

Sound removed due to copyright violations

If your sound is removed due to copyright, you might not have the chance to appeal it. However, you will be able to replace the sound if you cannot appeal. Some accounts will be able to appeal. If so, this is how to go about that:

  1. Go to your video.
  2. Click on the notice to see why the sound was removed.
  3. Choose Appeal and follow the instructions on how to appeal.

Please be aware, if you have the same sound on multiple videos, and it is removed, you will need to either appeal or replace the sound for each video. One appeal or sound alteration will not change all videos affected.
