How to negotiate rates with brands

If you’re working with brands as an influencer, creator, or freelancer, knowing how to negotiate your rates is crucial. It ensures you’re paid fairly for your time, skills, and reach.

1. Know your worth

Before discussing money, understand the value you bring to the brand. Consider:

  • Your follower count and engagement rate (if you’re an influencer).
  • The quality of your work and time required.
  • The type of content the brand wants (videos, posts, blogs).

Use tools like Social Bluebook to estimate your worth, or research what others in your niche charge.

2. Ask about the scope of work

Get all the details about what the brand wants before quoting a price. For example:

  • How many posts, videos, or stories?
  • Deadlines and timeline for delivery?
  • Will you need to revise the content if requested?

Knowing the scope helps you calculate your rate accurately.

3. Start higher than your minimum

When quoting a price, aim slightly above what you’re willing to accept. This gives room for negotiation while ensuring you don’t undersell yourself. For example, if your minimum is $200, quote $250–$300.

4. Be professional but firm

If the brand counters with a lower offer, stay polite but confident. You can say something like:

  • “I’d love to work with you, but based on the scope, my rate is $___.”
  • “Thank you for your offer. Is there flexibility in the budget?”

5. Offer value add-ons

If the brand has a tight budget, suggest alternatives to meet their needs, like fewer deliverables or extra services (e.g., offering one additional story post).

6. Always get it in writing

Once you agree on terms, request a written agreement outlining the scope, payment, and deadlines. This protects both you and the brand.

Negotiating rates takes practice, but by valuing your skills and staying professional, you’ll land better deals while maintaining great relationships with brands!
