YouTube has introduced a subscription plan that will allow two individuals within the same household to share a Premium plan for a discounted cost. Rather than having to pay two individual costs, they can split a discounted duo cost.

However, this hasn’t been something they’ve heavily marketed. Is this because they have only opened it to certain markets, or is it potentially because they don’t want those currently subscribed to the individual plan to switch, therefore losing them money?

At this current time, the pilot feature has been introduced within India, Taiwan, Hong Kong and France. The plan is targeted towards couples or housemates. If there are two of you using YouTube Premium within one household, you qualify.

We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced.

The new subscription plan is similar to that of Spotify Duo. Spotify are constantly growing their Premium subscribers, YouTube wants to follow suit and therefore, seem to be going after the features that have worked for Spotify.

Spotify introduced Duo back in July 2020, and it is now available in 55 markets. Within the US, it costs $12.99 per month and the UK is £12.99 each month. However, as of June 2024, the price in the US reached $16.99 per month. Arguably still very affordable for most.

A breakdown of the cost for YouTube’s duo subscription in India however is as follows; 219 rupees ($2.60). Their individual plan costs 149 rupees ($1.77) and their family plan is 299 rupees (3.54). Users must be over 13 to use YouTube Premium in India.

This is comparable with Spotify’s subscription costs, which are; 119 rupees ($1.40) for an individual, 149 rupees ($1.76) for the duo plan, 179 rupees ($2.11) for a family plan and 59 rupees for a student. As you can see, Spotify is still the cheaper option.
