If someone has gained access to your Instagram account, it could spiral. Before you know it, they could have changed your data and access further social accounts or private information. You want to stop it from getting out of hand as soon as you notice.

The good thing is, Instagram do offer options if your account security has been compromised. If you can access the account, you should change your details immediately. Change your password, email, username and any information they could have stored.

If you’re unable to get into your account, which sadly is normally the case, you can head to this page via a desktop or mobile browser and fill in the information to secure your account. You might need to prove you are who you say you are first.

If the person hacking your account has accessed your personal information and changed your email address, you can let Instagram know. They will send two emails. One will be to the new account, and the other, to the old email address.

The new email account will not be able to deny the request to revert the email. Only the original email address will be sent mail with this option. If you receive the email, you can revert the decision and take the relevant steps to secure your account.

Please be aware the email contacting you will be security@mail.instagram.com – if you are contacted from anyone else during this process, report it, and ignore it. Do not follow any other links from other email addresses.

Instagram has a Help Center where you can submit reports and contact their support team. If the steps above have not worked, and you are still blocked from your own account, please reach out to them and await their next steps.
