Beginner’s guide to synthesizers – what are they, and who might need one?

Synthesizers are used widely within the independent musician world. They’re paired with a laptop or computer and compose electronic music. There would be no EDM without them.

What is a synthesizer?

A synthesizer is a machine which connects to your computer. It’s used to generate and modify sounds. Largely used within electronic music, however it can be used within other genres too depending on the type of sound you’re looking for.

Typically, they look like a keyboard, but they’re so much more than that. They allow you to tweak specific elements of a sound, rather than adjusting the whole sound. Synthesizers have extra buttons which allow you to really manipulate a sound.

There are various types of synthesizers, and the type you need will depend on what you intend to use it for. Musicians, and music engineers might use different styles. However, it will take some research to know which is right for you.

Who might need a synthesizer?

Synthesizers are largely used by music engineers and those who master and produce music. However, more and more musicians are opting to be independent. So, it isn’t unusual to see a music artist owning a synth.

Especially those within the EDM world. Any music artist looking to create their own sounds will probably use a synth, or have access to one. While there are alternative ways to create unique sounds, a synthesizer will allow you more control.

As more musicians are holding full control over their sounds, there’s more room for home studios and portable equipment. Many will therefore have a synth setup. You’ll also find a place within the music world for those just creating sounds and not full tracks.

Synthesizers are a cool piece of kit because they do come in such a huge variety. No two are the same, and they allow a lot more control over every aspect of your track. For those wanting to alter the bass, you might choose a certain synth.

As we move more and more towards a digital world, you’ll find that many DAWs have a built-in synth software. This might not be suitable for those who want to really feel the sound, and they turn each button. But, it’s great for beginners.
