YouTube Premium Lite launches in Australia and Germany

YouTube Premium Lite was introduced as a way for users to access some locked features but for a fraction of the price. It’s now available in two more regions.

YouTube Premium Lite was first introduced as a way for users to save money while still upgrading their account. Users could access premium features without having the heavy price tag that not everyone can afford. The idea is, it will have adverts, but less than a free account.

First launched in Europe, spanning Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. The platform launched the subscription option to encourage more users to upgrade their accounts. Now, they’re expanding into Australia and Germany.

It’s been said that users in these two countries have spotted the option become available for them. The cost of Premium Lite is half the standard Premium plan, which means it’s far more accessible. It doesn’t completely remove annoying adverts, but does lessen them.

How to reduce YouTube adverts

This is a great option for users who are bothered by constant adverts interrupting their videos, but aren’t able to spend the money each month on YouTube’s Premium plan. The feature only stretches as far as reducing adverts, though.

We’re testing a different version of Premium Lite and some users in Australia, Germany and Thailand may see the option to sign up.

Google

You won’t be able to access options like YouTube Music, offline downloads or background play. These are only available on the full YouTube Premium option. Premium Lite costs $11.99 in Australia, compared with the full version costing $22.99.

The idea of Lite plans have come and gone. Google removed the option in 2023 for most countries and confirmed they’d continue to test in Thailand. It seems they’ve found it could be a beneficial tool in various regions for YouTube if nothing else.

Google have confirmed they’re testing Premium Lite, but are highlighting how this is a different version to what has previously been available. It will be interesting to see how it differs. If it’s just reducing adverts, we can’t see it taking off.
