For the first time, China’s sales metrics will be added to global data, allowing people to view through Billboard’s charts. Music consumption numbers will be visible, which isn’t something that has happened before.

Now, people can view music consumption metrics from the Chinese market, through Billboard’s Global Charts. The entertainment industry research company Luminate has managed to strike a deal with Tencent Music Entertainment Group.
This is China’s biggest music streaming platform. The deal will see Luminate able to access and incorporate the music company’s data into their global metrics. Luminate will track both streaming and sales metrics from all Tencent platforms.
These include; QQ Music, Kugou Music, Kuwo Music and JOOX. Those who subscribe to Luminate’s CONNECT platform will have access to the data, and the announcement of Chinese data within the Billboard Global Charts will come at a later point.
Both Luminate and Tencent have said the partnership will address “a long-standing gap in representation”. Before now, there was a huge population missing from global results. China is one of the largest and most dynamic music regions in the world.
The research company now covers over 60 markets worldwide. Recent additions include, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and of course now China. Great efforts have been made to close any gaps.
