YouTube previously allowed users from 13 to 15 to partake in livestreams. However, as of the 22nd July, this will come to an end and only those 16 or above will be able to go live.

YouTube is stepping up the protection for younger users by changing the age limit of those allowed to take part in livestreaming. Previously, younger users were allowed to get involved, but now, only those over 16 will have this option.
The platform will even remove any livestreams that show younger users who aren’t accompanied by an adult. These users will even have their accounts disabled for live chat or any other live features. They’re doing everything possible to prevent them from being featured.
“As of July 22, we are increasing the minimum age required to livestream to 16 years old. This means that creators will need to be 16 or older to be able to livestream on YouTube. Additionally, livestreams featuring 13-15 year olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have their live chat disabled and the account may temporarily lose access to live chat or other features. Please note that, in the future, we plan to take down these livestreams and the account may temporarily lose its ability to live stream.”

It’s thought, streamers in the gaming industry might be affected the most, after all, going live is one of the best ways they can build an audience and interact with their followers. Playing games while live and having the chat option open for people to connect.
Gamers tend to start in their teens, and grow into their young adult years. Taking the chance for going live away from a demographic who rely on it might seem unfair, but it is for their own safety and protection.
After all, YouTube would be held responsible if something were to go wrong. The platform haven’t actually said exactly why they’re putting these measures into place. However, it’s pretty easy to guess why, for their protection as much as their user’s.
