Four years ago, Apple introduced their AirPods Max and just recently, they have announced there will be an update to the product. In April, Apple will release an iOS 18.4 update, as well as iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4.

The update will mean listeners can now access lossless audio, which is compressed audio containing all the original audio information. It’s decoded in a way that is identical to the original. Lossy formats such as MP3 lose some of the data as they compress the files.

Lossless formats are files such as FLAC or ALAC. For real music enthusiasts, this update will be welcomed as many with a trained ear really can tell the difference and notice the loss of quality. The catch though is, the update is only for the newer AirPods Max models.

Recently, Apple changed their AirPods to use a USB-C charging port. Only those with this type of device will be able to take advantage of the update. It’s said this is due to restrictions that come from the lightening models.

As well as lossless, listeners will have access to ultra-low latency audio, which is a perk for those who stream or game because it comes with much less lag and delay. It’s considered an immersive experience, and Apple introducing it shows they’re keeping up.

The drawback is, these options will only be accessible if you wire in your headphones. You won’t be able to listen wireless with these modes. You’ll need to connect them to your USB-C cable. Don’t fret, though, Apple are selling these for $39… a bargain.

If you’re able to plug your headphones into your car radio or similar, you will be able to listen to both lossless and ultra-low latency through your car. Lossless audio will even be compatible with Spatial Audio, and listeners will have over 100 million songs to choose from.
