Instagram’s inclusivity – how to add your pronouns, update your gender and more!

Instagram has many ways a user can display who they are. They’re able to add their gender, pronouns, change their name, or just completely leave these things out if they don’t wish to share that information.

In efforts to be completely inclusive, Instagram have listed ways in which their users can be their complete, authentic self online. In 2024, it shouldn’t be a challenge to be a transgender, gender non-conforming, genderqueer or non-binary person.

However, unfortunately, while we have come so far as a society, we still have a long way to go. Instagram, however, have tried to list ways in which individuals can be themselves without barriers in the way. Barriers which so many will face.

The social platform encourage their users to use their preferred name within their information. All information such as adding a name to your bio, personal account and payment information can be changed. However, it’s important to note with payment info, it must match.

For example, if you’re a bank account holder with one name, this name will need to be displayed on your payment information on Instagram. This is completely private, however. Only Instagram, and yourself, can see this data.

Your bio is the place to show who you are, so ensure this has been updated with your preferred name. Instagram also allows pronouns to be included within bios, so we’d actively encourage adding yours if this is something you’d like to do.

If you’re looking to change your name within Instagram’s account details, you might need to submit documentation with your preferred name. This is to avoid any legal headache with Instagram. No one can accuse you of not being who you say you are.

After all, unfortunately, Instagram, like other social platforms, is a place where many impersonate celebrities or well-known individuals. So, know that it is for your protection as much as it is theirs when they ask you for documents.

Important information

  • You do not have to input your gender/pronouns or name to your Instagram profile or bio.
  • When Instagram reaches out, they will only refer to you as your username.
  • Your account will display your username and any information you place in your bio.
  • No one can see your gender, or pronouns unless you choose to display them.
  • You can at any stage update your gender identity in your Instagram account settings.
  • Connecting your Instagram account to a third-party website may display your name.

How to verify your identity on Instagram

If you are asked by Instagram to confirm your identity, you will need to upload documents with your name. This is only to access certain features on the platform, or to verify your account. If required, you will need to add your government ID, or something else that qualifies under Instagram’s list. It will need to display a legal or preferred name.

How to update your Instagram account

You’re able to update your name, username and pronouns through your Instagram profile. If you have a verified account, you’ll likely be asked to provide documentation to match the name provided with your ID. This is to protect you and Instagram.

If your amount gets verified, you won’t be able to change your username, or transfer the verification to a different account. This is because you have been verified for being who you claim to be, so Instagram can’t pass your identity to someone else.

To update any information, head over to your Instagram settings. You’ll see the option to change all personal information. If Instagram requires documentation, they will ask for it. They’ll also specify what they can and can’t accept.
