Things I wish I’d known earlier as a blog writer

Writing for a blog can be daunting. How do you find new ideas? What counts as copyright? Can I use this website as a reference? How much is too much? When should I post? There are so many questions, but here are my thoughts.

Starting a blog is exciting, but there are many things I wish I had known earlier that would have made the process smoother. You have to go through the process of trial and error to figure out where your content lies and how you can improve. I had no idea where to begin with all things SEO and keywords. Here are some key lessons I’ve learned along the way.

1. Consistency is key

At first, I thought writing whenever inspiration struck was enough. But I soon realised that consistency is what really helps grow a blog. Posting regularly keeps your audience engaged and helps improve your blog’s visibility in search engines. Set a realistic posting schedule, whether it’s once a week or twice a month, and stick to it.

2. Quality over quantity

I used to think that publishing more content would automatically lead to more readers. But I’ve learned that quality matters more than the number of posts. Take the time to write valuable, informative, or entertaining content that resonates with your audience. One well-written post is better than several rushed ones.

3. SEO matters

In the beginning, I didn’t pay much attention to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). But SEO is crucial for helping your blog get found on Google and other search engines. Simple things like using relevant keywords, optimising titles, and adding meta descriptions can make a big difference in how many people find your blog.

4. Building an email list early helps

I wish I had started collecting email subscribers from day one. An email list allows you to keep in touch with readers directly, without relying on social media algorithms. Offering a free resource, like an e-book or checklist, can encourage people to subscribe. You can offer these services for free through the use of PUSH.fm.

5. It’s okay to learn as you go

Blogging can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to know everything right away. It’s okay to make mistakes and learn as you go. The most important thing is to start and improve over time. If I had known these tips earlier, my blogging journey would have been much easier. Hopefully, they help you as you begin or grow your blog!
