Many indie artists aren’t aware they qualify or how simple the process is. This guide will walk you through what an OAC is, why you need one, and how to get it without a major label behind you.

What is an Official Artist Channel (OAC)?

An OAC is a specialised YouTube channel designed specifically for musicians. It automatically combines all your various YouTube presences into one official hub:

  1. Your topic channel: This is an auto-generated channel created by YouTube that houses your music distributed through platforms like DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby. It’s labelled “Artist – Topic.”
  2. Your personal channel: This is the channel you created yourself, where you upload music videos, vlogs, and other content.
  3. Your Vevo channel (if applicable): If you’ve ever had content delivered to Vevo, that would also be linked.

Once merged into an OAC, all your official releases (from your distributor) appear in a dedicated ‘Album’ and ‘Singles’ section on your main channel, separate from your other content. This creates a professional, organised storefront for your music.

Why every indie artist needs an OAC

No more splitting your views and subscribers across multiple channels. All your official music is housed under one roof, making it easier for fans to find everything in one place. Your subscriber count is consolidated, giving you a bigger, more impressive number.

OACs unlock special features:

  • Official music sections: Your albums and singles appear in dedicated shelves, automatically organised by YouTube.
  • Concerts tab: Promote your live shows directly on your channel.
  • Analytics for topic channel: Access the detailed analytics for all your distributed music, which you couldn’t do before.
  • Visibility: OACs are prioritised in search results and have a special music note verification badge, instantly telling users this is the official artist.

An OAC makes you look like a signed artist. It’s a stamp of legitimacy that helps build trust and credibility with listeners and industry professionals.

How to get your Official Artist Channel

You do not need to be signed to a major label to get an OAC. There are two primary ways for independent artists:

Most digital music distributors (DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, etc.) offer OAC creation as part of their service, often for free or a small one-time fee. This is usually the quickest and most reliable method.

  1. Check eligibility: You typically need at least three official music releases distributed to YouTube Content ID (this usually happens automatically when you distribute to streaming services).
  2. Contact your distributor: Look for an ‘Official Artist Channel’ or ‘YouTube OAC’ option within your distributor’s dashboard or support section.
  3. Provide your channel IDs: You’ll usually need to provide the URL or Channel ID for your main personal YouTube channel and your Artist – Topic channel.
  4. Wait: The process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, as it involves YouTube‘s internal review.

If your distributor doesn’t offer OAC creation, you can apply directly through YouTube if you meet their criteria:

  1. You own and operate a YouTube channel that represents an artist or band.
  2. You have at least one official music release on YouTube (delivered via a music distributor).
  3. You have a YouTube Partner Programme (YPP) account. This typically requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months, or 10 million valid public YouTube Shorts views in the past 90 days.

If you meet these, you can contact YouTube Creator Support (available via the chat or email options in your YouTube Studio dashboard) and request an OAC.

After you get your OAC: Top tips

  • Customise: Upload an artist-specific banner, profile picture, and channel trailer.
  • Organise: Use playlists to group your content (e.g., “Behind the Scenes,” “Live Performances,” “Vlogs”) so it doesn’t get lost among your official music.
  • Promote: Update all your social media links and PUSH.fm Smart Links to point to your new, consolidated OAC URL.
  • Engage: Respond to comments on your music videos to build community.

Getting your Official Artist Channel is a significant step in legitimising your music career and maximising your reach on YouTube. It’s a free, powerful tool that no serious independent musician should overlook.
