Launched last week was Songscription, an AI model that automates music transcripts. It can turn a standard audio file into sheet music within minutes, making your favourite songs accessible to replicate for your own pleasure.

It operates on a freemium model, which is where a company allows free access to their products with some restricted. Those restricted tools fall under a premium tier, allowing full access. The product is therefore targeted towards professionals and amateurs.

No matter what music level you’re at, Songscription could be a tool you incorporate into your musical practise. After all, it will allow you to play a whole range of tracks. Hopefully, if you can play songs you enjoy, it might spark a musical interest.

“We imagine a future where a rural Nebraska high school band teacher [will be] able to get sheet music for the songs their students want to play, [and] that said music will be arranged specifically for the instruments in the band and offered at the individual level of play of each student.”

Andrew Carlins, CEO of Songscription

At the moment, while Songscription can transcribe music for multiple instruments, it is best used for the piano. This is the most reliable instrument at the moment. However, in time, transcription outputs should hopefully be added.

The company hope to add things such as guitar tabs as well arrangements for entire bands, rather than just one instrument. If you’re not able to write sheet music, this tool could be used to help you out.

Write and record your music, and then play it to Songscription. Within minutes, you’ll have your own sheet music. The app will even show a digital representation of the music being played on a virtual piano. You can even get transcriptions straight from YouTube links.

If you’re uploading a file, you must tick the box to say you have rights to transcribe the file. However, there are no background checks, so no one is stopping you. This is where the legal side comes under debate, as it does with all AI tools.
